The City of Birmingham seeks a skilled Carpenter whose role involves executing carpentry tasks related to the construction, modification, and repair of wooden structures and equipment, ensuring facilities remain safe and secure for both the public and employees. The employee is provided with overall goals and available resources, then collaborates with the supervisor to establish deadlines, project plans, and specific tasks. The employee is responsible for planning and completing assignments, addressing most issues that arise, and coordinating with others as needed. They interpret policies independently in the context of established objectives. Work assignments are communicated through work orders and verbal instructions. The employee operates with some autonomy in selecting materials and is subject to inspection by both the supervisor and local jurisdictional inspectors during and after construction.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess the following:
Driver's License.
Experience reading and interpreting architectural blueprints and drawings.
Experience fabricating customized wood-based structures from scratch (e.g., steps, rafters, platforms).
Experience determining specific measurements and materials needed.
JOB DUTIES
Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:
Determines project requirements and prepares to complete work projects.
Builds custom furniture (e.g., desks, cabinets, bookshelves).
Builds custom outdoor structures (e.g., benches, pavilions, stages).
Installs indoor structures (e.g., wall frames) and materials (e.g., flooring, ceilings).
Removes and replaces broken (e.g., windows), and deteriorated (e.g., boards on a park bench) parts to prevent safety hazards.
Repairs and installs locks and cuts keys.
Maintains equipment, inventory and paperwork.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves occasional moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing. May involve regular lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs or working at heights in excess of 10 feet off the ground.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both within employer-owned facilities such as workshop, warehouse, or station and in field locations such as external places of business, residence, and construction worksites. Work involves use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. and electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as power saws, nail guns, drills, etc. May be exposed to weather conditions such as extreme hot or cold temperatures.EEO STATEMENT:
