Job Profile SummarySenior Engineering Drafters within the Merit System are tasked with producing detailed plans, blueprints, and drawings that represent infrastructure systems (e.g., sewers, roads, architecture, and structural elements) using advanced computer-assisted drafting software (such as AutoCAD and Carlson) or manual techniques. These drawings and plans will be used to support civil engineering/construction projects, and public dissemination of information. In addition to drafting, Senior Engineering Drafters work closely with Engineers, Architects, Contractors and other professionals to review designs and make necessary modifications to civil engineering and construction plans to ensure compliance with project specifications and recommended adjustments. They operate under general supervision, with their work subject to review for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with professional standards and guidelines.

Birmingham: $44,678 - $69,305
Jefferson County: $48,672 - $75,504
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Option A:
Associates degree or higher from an accredited college or technical school in Drafting, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field of study.
Driver’s license.
Work experience using computer-aided drawing software (Auto-CAD, MicroStation, InRoads, Carlson, etc.) for architectural or civil design projects and mapping.
Option B:
Experience working on construction projects (e.g., buildings, highways, utilities, bridges) as a surveyor, survey crew member, construction/engineering inspector, or drafter/designer.
Driver’s license.
Work experience using computer-aided drawing software (Auto-CAD, MicroStation, InRoads, Carlson, etc.) for architectural or civil design projects and mapping.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies . These qualifications may be considered by the agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Experience using Carlson and/or AutoCAD to produce drawings/plans.
Experience working on a surveying crew.
Experience reading/interpreting construction drawings.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Assists in managing civil engineering and/or construction projects by conducting on-site inspections, reviewing work of crews and contractors, and interacting with the public.
Estimates construction costs and quantities of materials needed for plans and projects by reviewing plans and drawings, calculating areas/volumes/slopes etc, and determining the types of materials that should be used in a project based on details of the work to be completed.
Maintains hard-copy and computer-based filing system by manually organizing hard copies and electronic copies of maps and drawings in order to ensure data is properly documented and easy to access.
Produces maps and drawings by using drafting tools and software and mapping software in order to accurately depict county infrastructure for construction/maintenance purposes and general documentation purposes.
Produces plans, blueprints, and drawings by using drafting tools and software in order to assist with planning civil engineering and construction projects.
Provides customer service by researching and investigating existing structures, maps and documents, and assisting in developing plans in order to communicate accurate information to colleagues and other individuals including drafters, engineers, architects, supervisors, consultants and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time. At times, job may require light to moderate physical exertion, including lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or twisting. Job may also involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as regular field visits to outdoor worksites. Incumbents may be required to enter properties, construction sites, residences, and buildings under various stages of construction and repair. Job may also require incumbents to be exposed to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.).EEO STATEMENT:
