JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified, motivated Architecture Aide to provide essential support to Architects and Building Specialists in a variety of construction-related activities. Responsibilities include conducting on-site construction progress observations, assisting with administrative tasks, coordinating schedules, and documenting existing site conditions through photographs and field measurements. Aides also support compliance assessments, including measurements for ADA accessibility. In this role, incumbents operate a range of measuring tools such as electronic distance meters, levels, and measuring tapes to collect and record physical dimensions, linear distances, and building areas. They also utilize standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, printers, and scanners. Fieldwork may require exposure to varying and potentially inclement weather conditions.

Birmingham $14.03 - $24.87

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver’s license.

  • Work experience using tape measure, ruler, and electronic level, and hand tools such as screwdrivers, hammers, saws, to calculate measurements and perform various tasks.

  • Work experience preparing written documentation such as forms, reports, and letters.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Experience as a professional in housing or building construction trades (e.g., carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, HVAC, and mechanical).

  • Experience performing building inspection work for conformance to building codes, which includes experience creating bid specifications and making cost estimates to attain code compliance.

  • Experience applying building codes to perform building inspections, create bid specifications, and estimate costs. includes experience creating bid specifications and making cost estimates to attain code compliance.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Assists Architects and/or Building Specialists conduct site visits by documenting existing conditions and/or work progress using notes, pictures, field measurements, and written reports so that work can be planned and completed in compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and federal law (e.g., Americans with Disability Act).

  • Plans and prepares for daily activities by prioritizing scheduled site visits, determining equipment and supply needs, and ensuring the vehicle is safe and stocked if required so that work can be carried out quickly and efficiently.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted both indoors in office setting as well as regular field visits to external places of business or construction worksites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
