Jefferson County is seeking a qualified Surveyor to support various departments, including Roads and Transportation and Environmental Services. Surveyors are responsible for setting up and operating surveying instruments with an engineering survey party involved in preliminary, special instruction, and final surveys. Incumbents prepare to conduct surveys by reviewing maps and plans, replenishing supplies, and ensuring equipment is ready and functioning appropriately. Incumbents inspect the work of the survey team for adherence to all policies and procedures and accuracy and document the daily work accomplished.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver's license.
Experience operating surveying instruments (e.g., total station, level, GPS unit, and electronic data collector).
Experience calculating data gathered from surveying instruments such as maps, deeds, etc.
Experience reading maps, deeds, plans, etc.
Experience working on a survey crew performing duties to include clearing brush, locating landmarks, and assisting other members of a survey crew in gathering data.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by Jefferson County when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Three years of experience operating survey equipment.
Knowledge of algebra and trigonometry.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Prepares for surveying activities using established procedures and practices by inspecting the work truck for safety and maintenance concerns, ensuring the work truck is stocked with necessary supplies and equipment, reviewing appropriate documentation regarding the work to be performed, and preparing the worksite for surveying to take place.
Acts as a lead worker of peer or support staff by assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback using policies, procedures, tools, and directives from management in order to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with established requirements.
Sets up and operates surveying instruments using established protocol by positioning measuring devices, cross-checking arithmetic calculations, and recording level notes in order to gather field measurements so that a preliminary, special instruction, construction or final/as-built survey can be performed.
Performs post-survey activities including cleaning, inspecting, and packing survey equipment, charging batteries, completing daily log, and downloading electronic data so that work is documented and equipment is ready for the next assignment.
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of moderate physical activity such as walking on unstable ground for long distances, bending, crawling and exerting muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites and frequently requires incumbents to work on uneven, cluttered and slippery surfaces and around moving vehicle hazards. Work may require exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards, unpleasant smells, poisonous plants and dangerous animals, reptiles, or insects. Job may also require exposure to inclement weather (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.). Incumbents in this position are required to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety belts, glasses, gloves, and hard hats.EEO STATEMENT:
