JOB SUMMARY:

Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking to hire Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) to be responsible for performing various patient care procedures within the scope of practice. Employees in this job class are expected to handle the patient process by reviewing medical history, conducting and recording patient interviews, and collecting baseline health information. CMAs are also expected to manage rooming and patient flow, including pre-visit preparation, assisting with patient visits, and post-visit duties. They may also assist with front office activities such as answering phones, general customer service, and scheduling appointments, treatments, and other tasks as needed. Certified Medical Assistants typically work in a clinical or laboratory setting and may be required to work on evenings and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.

  • Currently certified as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by the National Healthcare Association (NHA).

  • Experience working in a clinical or ambulatory care setting (e.g., doctor's office, hospital, urgent care).

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Speaks English and Spanish.

  • Current CPR Certification.

  • Experience working within electronic health records.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Administers prescribed oral medications and gives intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections.

  • Arranges for specialization consultations, appointments, and referrals for services as ordered by the clinical staff.

  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe environment for patients and visitors, including disinfection and cleaning of patient care areas and sterilizing and storing instruments. Prepares exam rooms for patient appointments.

  • Answering office phones, assisting with administrative and clerical duties as needed including scheduling appointments, tests, treatments, directing calls, and assisting with the check in and check out procedures.

  • Complete daily lab tasks; perform specimen collections including venipunctures, CLIA Waived and non-CLIA Waved lab tests.

  • Obtain vital signs including pulse, blood pressure, respiration, height, weight, temperature. Perform tests and procedures such as vision, hearing, electrocardiogram, cerumen removal, and other testing in accordance with certification and protocols.

  • Greet and escort patient to the appropriate areas; review medical history; record patient interview, history, chief complaint, and baseline information; obtain and record medication listing.

  • Check all rooms and inventory for supplies. Orders supplies as needed and stocks rooms according to procedure. Monitors medication inventory as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily within medical or healthcare facilities. Work involves use of medical tools and equipment necessary for the care and/or diagnosis of healthcare patients. May be exposed to a variety of adverse working conditions, including: exposure to bodily fluids and other bio-hazard materials (e.g., urine, sweat, saliva, blood, etc.), and exposure to contagious or infectious diseases.
