The City of Birmingham is looking for a well-qualified and motivated Public Works District Supervisor to plan, organize, evaluate, and control the day-to-day operations of a designated district. Responsibilities include scheduling, implementing procedures, assigning equipment and manpower, planning short-term activities, and developing and implementing work objectives for each district. Incumbents in this job class are also responsible for ensuring that all services within the district are performed effectively and efficiently. Supervision of projects by the Public Works District Supervisor may be exercised directly, or through subordinate supervisory personnel. Public Works District Supervisors perform work with considerable independence. Incumbents receive managerial direction with assignments in terms of broad practice, precedents, policies, and goals. Work performed by the Public Works District Supervisor is reviewed through conferences, inspections of work sites, review of reports, and performance evaluations. Work may also be reviewed for the fulfillment of program objectives and for conformance with department policy and practice. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Possession of a valid Class B CDL.
Experience overseeing street and sanitation duties (e.g., collecting refuse, street sweeping, trash and brush pickup) and storm sewer maintenance and repair (e.g., repairing inlets, replacing inlet tops, clearing drains).
Experience planning, assigning, and reviewing work including establishing daily objectives, providing feedback, guidance, and discipline when needed.
Experience completing requisitions for the acquisition of safety equipment, tools, and office supplies.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
Provides customer service, internally and/or externally, via phone, email or face to face interaction.
Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.
Manages, coordinates, reviews, and investigates as necessary all community projects, citizen complaints, and claims by coordinating with public works crews and contracts. Investigates citizen claims and complaints through visual inspection, documentation, and interviews.
Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job occasionally involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Job may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in office setting as well as regular field visits to external construction worksites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work may also involve the use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. Workers may be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic, etc.EEO STATEMENT:
